The Protein Society, an international non-profit organization, annually honors researchers who contribute to studying proteins. The 38th Protein Society Annual Symposium took place in Vancouver, Canada, from July 23 to 26, 2024. The award ceremony, featuring the Carl Brändén Award and the Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin Award, both sponsored by Rigaku, was held during the symposium.

2024 Protein Society Symposium and Award winners

Carl Brändén Award
・Professor Tamir Gonen, University of California Los Angeles
・For pioneering work on developing Microcrystal Electron Diffraction (MicroED), and for teaching and disseminating the method. The development of the MicroED technology has expanded the capabilities of cryo-electron Microscopy (Cryo-EM), enabling the determination of previously unknown structures even for proteins that remained unattainable by other methods.

Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin Award
・Professor Margaret Sunde, University of Sydney
・Pioneering studies on amyloid have revealed its unique ‘cross-β’ structure, significantly advancing the field of amyloid research. Amyloid, a fibrous protein associated with various challenging diseases, has had elusive origins and potential treatments. Understanding its conformational structure has deepened insights into the mechanisms of disease development.
