Why do we need “Materiality”?

Rigaku group has upheld the corporate mission of its founders to “contribute to the enhancement of humanity through the development of science and technology,” working with the motto to “Value our customers, value our people, and value our technology.” Now the global environment issues including climate change, inappropriate management of resources, and loss of biodiversity affect our daily life and sustainability of society and economy. To bring this to life, we have determined our “Materiality”, the areas where our strengths and solutions are aligned with key societal and economic trends. We have integrated this materiality into our mid-to-long term strategy. Based on this materiality, we will work to keep developing and growing with our customers, at the same time contributing to a sustainable world through our business activities.

Process for specifying sustainability related materiality

Identify a pool of potential social issues

Identify and compile a long-list of societal issues for evaluation with reference to the GRI Standards, SASB, the UN SDGs, and other international guidelines. Tailor the list adding some further items specific to Rigaku’s business and profile.
Individual executives’ views on materiality gathered in survey

Conduct and collate a survey of "important social issues for my company" with around 40 key people. Survey respondents are executive officers and above and based worldwide, including independent directors/auditors. Also, prepare reference data about competitors and guidelines information to provide an external view.
Executive management group’s opinions on materiality consolidated at Sustainability Steering Committee

Based on the survey results, discuss the most prominent social issues at the Sustainability Promotion Committee and build the final Materiality matrix for presentation to and endorsement by the Board of Directors.
KPIs were set in line with the Materiality, also approved by the Board.

Sustainability Governance System

To promote our company’s mid-to-long term sustainable growth, we have established the Sustainability Promotion Committee, with the President and Group CEO serving as the Chairman. This Committee serves as an advisory body to the Board of Directors. The Sustainability Promotion Committee meets semiannually to drive the company's sustainable growth priorities, and to review company policies and activities around governance, social contributions and environmental impacts. We also have a Sustainability Promotion Liaison Meeting, which reports to the Committee, and is composed of a number of working groups, each of which is aiming to instill sustainability throughout the organization.

Human Rights Policy

Rigaku Group Human Rights Policy: Rigaku respects human rights and works to promote respect for human rights through our supply chain. This Policy sets out our basic stance on human rights.

Procurement Policies

Procurement policy: This Policy sets out Rigaku’s basic stance on procurement, including the importance of sustainability.

CSR procurement guideline: This Guideline sets out Rigaku’s expectations towards participants in the supply chain with regard to responsible behaviour on human rights, environmental protection and other important societal issues.

Green procurement guideline: Rigaku group is working to reduce use of chemical substances which are potentially hazardous, and ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations. These Guidelines set out our stance and expectation towards suppliers.
